Top-seeded and undefeated Bay Shore knocked off the Centereach Cougars 6-2 in the first round of the Suffolk County Class AA softball playoffs last Wednesday in a game played at the Fifth Avenue Elementary School in Bay Shore. Centereach, the 16th seed, advanced after competing in an outbracket game on May 24, defeating No. 17 Walt Whitman 4-2.

"We were excited and a little disappointed going into the game," said Centereach head coach Sal Santoro. "We were disappointed at being the 16th seed and having to play the top team in the state. There were two teams with worse records than us that were seeded ahead of us. But it was a great game. We were down 2-0 and we came back to tie it up. I think we surprised Bay Shore by doing that."

Knotted at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Bay Shore scored an unearned run to make it 3-2 then loaded the bases for Briana Coan who delivered a two out double to drive home all three runners giving the Marauders a 6-2 lead. Taylor McGowan did the rest as she struck out nine Cougars and surrendered just three hits in picking up the win. Emma Agostini took the loss for Centereach.

"We actually had more hits than had been reported," said Santoro. "We had four or five hits not the three that they had reported. But this was a good season. We had the most wins that any Centereach team had since the '70s so you would have to call it a successful season. But I believe that we deserved a better seed in the playoffs. I'm real proud of these girls. They broke a lot of offensive records this year."
